A Letter to the Rain

Yet again this year you have made an appearance. Don’t worry – that’s not a bad thing! Not in my opinion anyway.  I am one of the few who do not shy away at the sight of you or run for cover when you come outside to greet us. I do not dislike you at all - quite the opposite in fact.

You see, I do not think of you as worse than your sister the Sun. I much prefer you to her if I’m honest; an opinion many, it seems, do not share. Most people squirm and squeal as you pour down from the heavens. Trickling down our backs and hitting our face with varying degrees of aggression, most people hide away in disgust, wishing that you would go away once and for all. While I laugh out loud with joy. Laughing and grinning, as you soak my cheeks and flatten my hair so that it sticks to my beaming face. You batter the top of my head as I walk down the street, very much umbrella-less, unlike those who rush by around me – hurrying for cover.

There are times though, when I don’t like you as much as I usually do. When you wrecked some of my books, for instance. Or soaked me through the skin so that I was shivering for the rest of the day. When you made your way through my school bag, ensuring that you touched every single bit of its contents and peeled their edges and covers as far back as you possibly could. When you slipped so slyly into our house and refused to leave until we gathered you up with raggedy old towels and floppy kitchen roll.

But that’s okay. No one can ever be perfect.

I used to have you around for the majority of the time and it’s only from your absence that I have grown to love you more. Some people may think I’m a weirdo for liking you, for flinging my arms out wide to welcome you while they huddle in crammed groups under bus shelters and overhanging rooves to escape you… But I don’t care. They may have their sweltering and overbearing Sun, but I have you. In all your damp glory.

5 of my favourite Disney songs

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Disney. I seem to either be watching one of their films or singing one of their songs, much to the annoyance of my family. Many of their songs are, in my opinion, brilliantly written and often have great lyrics.  So, seeing as Disney is so well loved then I thought  would share with you my 5 favourite Disney songs.

5. A Whole New World – Aladdin

Aladdin was my favourite Disney film when I was a kid, and I always loved this song – particularly singing both parts when it’s only me.

4. Tale as Old as Time – Beauty and the Beast

The whole ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast is one of the most iconic scenes in Disney (even though they re-animated the dance scene at the end of Sleeping Beauty!) and it really captured me as a child. The lyrics are so poetic, and that’s one of the reasons I love it so much.

3. So This Is Love – Cinderella

This song is beautiful. The combination of the classic voice of Ilene Woods and that gorgeous, laid back melody makes this song really special. It’s so simple and short, yet one of the most utterly gorgeous songs I know of.

2. When She Loved Me – Toy Story 2

I find my heart breaking every time I hear this song. Sarah Mclachan sings it so wonderfully and really exposes her character, Jesse’s, emotions.

1. I Won’t Say I’m In Love - Hercules

Megara is one of my absolute favourite Disney princesses, and even though she isn’t technically a princess I still like to think of her so. She has more background than your average Disney lead and this is really portrayed in her song. I think this song is very human, in the way that we don’t like sharing all of our thoughts, especially those involving love. I find that this is one of the songs that can make me happier in an instant. I belt out every lyric, including the backing vocals, singing along with Meg.

Don't Confine Me

In our society we are told that we have to be a certain type of person, and that person only. You can see this really clearly in the blogging/Internet world. As soon as we begin to post we are branded: beauty, travel, lifestyle… Whatever niche we choose to fit. Fitting into a specific niche can be quite difficult, especially if you want to write about all sorts of topics.

Take me for example; I’m a writer who adores books, Disney and cake. I love writing about my experiences with such things along many other topics that can include feminism, positivity and living your life in a way that will make you happy. I will write about most anything, as long as I’m passionate about it and I believe in it. If I find something interesting or inspiring then I will want to write about it.

I don’t like being confined to writing about only one thing, just as I don’t like being confined to a single type of person. I may be a writer, but I am also a daughter, a sister, and a friend. I am a reader, a runner, and a tea enthusiast! As humans, we are so much more than just one thing.

It is dehumanizing for us to be labeled as a singular thing, because that’s simply what we are not.

Think of it like that Shrek quote: “Ogres are like onions: they have layers.” (Best said with full accent to a friendly and over excited donkey.) It works the same way with humans. We all have different depths and there are always things you can learn about a person, even if you think you know them inside out.

And if you only know a person when they are in one part of their life don’t restrict them to that one title: remember the other aspects of them.

Remember that humans are not 2D.

"You know when I said I knew little about love? That's not true..."

One of my favourite films is Stardust (though I didn't mention it in my favourite films post oops...). You know the one with the witches and the princes, the pirates and the magical kingdom? Yeah, that one. Well, one of my favourite parts/lines from it is a bit that’s quite near the end of the film and the two main characters, Yvaine and Tristan (Tristran if you’re going by his original book name) are in a caravan, the latter being a mouse. Yvaine expresses her views on love and tells how she thinks that she loves him, to a supposedly unknowing Tristan.

I have always loved the way she worded her declaration; it seemed to sum up love for me. In all its weirdness and unconditional stuff.

No one really knows what love is and can’t describe it when they want to try, and Yvaine seems to make that pretty clear. Everyone seems to be confused by love and I don’t think we’ll ever properly figure it out.

The thing is that no one love is the same. There are so many different types of love and everyone loves in a different way that it has become impossible to pinpoint it exactly.

I myself love in lots of different ways. I love my family completely, even if they get on my nerves all the time. Even if they eat the last of my favourite food or don’t like watching Disney films with me all the time.

I love my friends. I don’t get to see most of them as much as I’d like to but I still love them. Especially when I’m with them and it’s like nothing has changed. Friends are special. Obviously there are varying degrees of friendship, as there are of love.  It’s never the same with each friend but it should always be treasured, nonetheless.

I love my cat. I love books. I love Nutella. I love music. I love words. I love myself. Each is a different kind of love in their own individual way and right.

It feels like the only sort of love that is focused on in our society is the romantic kind. (Yes, I know that demonstrated that kind with Yvaine and Tristan but let’s forget that!) Romantic love is shown everywhere; in films, books, just everywhere. It is important, but we should remember that it isn’t the only type of love we have. We can feel all sorts of love. It’s ridiculous how much love we can feel.

We shouldn’t restrict ourselves to romantic love, or let us think that just because we’re not in a relationship then we’re not loved. You have so many people around you who love you: your family, your friends, your dog, your cat, your goldfish. There are so many people who love you and surround you daily. Never forget them and never give up on them.

"You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate... It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves... You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and... What I'm trying to say, Tristan is... I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I'd know it for myself. My heart... It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it's trying to escape because it doesn't belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I'd wish for nothing in exchange - no gifts. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine."
