Why Bloggers Should Be Political

Monday, 20 March 2017

Since the politically traumatic events (and all other traumatic events) of 2016, we have seen a rise in celebrity ‘uprisings’, for lack of a better phrase, and consequently an increase of criticism of those celebrities who are getting more involved in politics. Artists such as Meryl Streep using their significant platforms, such as an acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, to speak out against a new far-right political climate that is emerging across the globe and are now being criticized for doing so, being told to know their limits and to stay within their industry. All I can say to that is:
But the use of a public platform doesn’t just apply to big name actors and singers etc. It should apply to anyone who can have any sort of influence through their public platform. And that includes us, bloggers.

I have no problem with bloggers who choose not to make their blogs political, that’s not for everyone, but if they have some sort of opinion on anything that’s going on currently, especially with the worrying events that could (read: will) have damaging effects on our world (*cough* Trump *cough* Brexit *cough*), they should at least mention something about their opinion on one of their social media platforms – it doesn’t have to be a full-length blog post.

Bloggers and other people will significant amounts of influence both online and IRL should use their voices to educate their audiences, who, in the case of many YouTubers, can be quite impressionable (that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it can lead to ignorance if people don’t treat them with respect). Education is key at a time like now, as any ignorance can be stifled by further understanding and widened knowledge.

I know it may not seem significant in the bigger picture, but every little action and its subsequent impact could have the potential to change someone’s views and open their minds for the better. Education and awareness are key to a healthier democracy and more accountable governments.

5 Feminist Bloggers You Should Be Reading

I have a lot of love for a lot of feminist bloggers and I think it’s very important that we read posts on feminism, particularly in the current climate. There’s also never a bad time to support other bloggers, so make sure you all go and check these lovely people out.

1. Nerdy and Wordy

Minerva is such a wonderful human being! We share a lot of interests (including a strident love for Peggy Carter) and she discusses various topics, as well as frequently talking about her fictional female icons, which is such a pleasure to read.

2. Hannah Witton

I actually love Hannah. I think I’ve watched every one of her videos and would recommend them to anyone – young or old. The videos she makes spreads awareness and positivity on feminism and sex. Her relatively new series, The Hormone Diaries, is one of my favourite aspects of her channel. There, she talks about her experiences after coming off the pill and anything you could think of that comes under the topic of periods, contraception, etc. I am definitely going to buy her book Doing It when it comes out later this year.

She does have a blog as well, so she can have a place on here as both vlogger and blogger.

3. Cattitude & co.

Tara is the essential feminist blogger. She unabashedly talks about all sorts of taboo subjects and is a key part of the feminist blogger community. Tara shares my love for planners and organization and I have such a crush on her blog layout and pictures!

4. Tape Parade

Laila is a fantastic writer and very articulately discusses her points of view on pressing issues. I don’t feel like I can describe Laila’s properly. Just trust me on this, and read her posts.

5. A Fabulous Feminist

And last, but not least, my lovely friend Anna, whose blog name really should tell you the general theme of a lot of her posts. She’s such a great person and her writing certainly reflects that. I am a huge fan of Anna’s poetry – you can see some of it on her blog and more on her poetry Instagram account @wildpetals.

5 Blogging Goals for 2017

Friday, 13 January 2017

My blog has grown a lot in the past year, so why not aim to continue that?

Credit

1. Reach 50,000 views

At the end of this year, my blog’s views were around 26,000, having been at around 7,000ish at the end of 2015. That makes me really proud and I would love to try to double my views next year.

2. Publish 90 posts

That’s 1.7 posts a week, so not too bad. I think I can do that pretty easily. I want to be able to write lots of posts that I’m proud of, so hopefully, I can do that! During exam time it can get difficult, but I've had

3. Write at least 10 political posts

I want to start articulating my thoughts on issues I’m passionate about and interested in. I love politics (you may have seen that I study it as one of my A Levels) and hope that by writing about current events I can spread education and improve my own personal understanding.

4. Try to do 2 sponsored posts

I have worked with companies and PRs this year, but I would love to reach out further and with more companies in the best way I can.

5. Do another collab!

I love working with my fellow bloggers! They’re all so creative and lovely and I feel honoured to call some of them my friends, both in real life and online. Speaking of this one, if any of you are interested in this then do email me!

2016 Blogging Goals: Completed?

Wednesday, 28 December 2016

I do love a goals post... My blog has grown a lot in the past year and that’s all down to my lovely readers!

1. Hit 20,000 views

Completed? Certainly!

My blog now has over 27,000 views. Incredible!

2. Do something with my header

Completed? Yes

I used Canva to create my new header, which fits the theme better and I think looks more professional. I am much happier with it but may make another change next year for the fun of it.

3. Do another collab

Completed? Kind of…

I haven’t done any specific collabs, but I have worked with a company for the first time, my friend Anna and I have done guest posts on each other’s blogs and I have been a part of the group blog, Through Our Eyes ever since July.

4. Reach 54 Bloglovin’ followers

Completed? Smashed it!

That was double the number of followers I had this time last year and I reached it within a few weeks. As I am writing, Another Ranting Reader has 337 Bloglovin’ followers. That’s pretty cool!

5. Improve my photography and editing

Completed? Meh

I don’t really know on this one. I sure hope it has. I’ve done my best, anyhow.

6 Blog Posts I Love

Wednesday, 17 August 2016

I’ve been blogging for a while now. In May, I had my first blogiversary, so I suppose I can now be considered an established blogger. And seeing as I hit another milestone the other week, after publishing my 150th post, I thought it would be quite nice to discuss some of my personal favourite blog posts that I’ve published here on Another Ranting Reader.

1. How to Time Travel

I love this one because the concept I talked about still blows my mind. I love the fact that pictures are essentially time capsules and that each and everyone has a hidden back story to it that we may never know. Ugh, I just love it. Love it love it love it. I feel like I could go on about this topic way less comprehensively so I’ll stop.

2. Why We All Need to Dream

This one was written during my exams at a point when I was ready to explode due to the amount of career/future talk my school had given us throughout the year. All I want to do is write and so when I did explode, that’s what I did, and this post was born.

3. My Nocturnal Paradise

I wrote this ages ago. I think it was actually about a year and a half ago. This poem was originally a short piece, like some of the other posts I’ve published (e.g. I’m a night owl), but after writing it I cut it down into smaller lines and changed it into a poem and to me, it seemed much better suited to that format. As my first (albeit not my best) poem published on my blog, this one means a lot to me.

4. Why We Need To Talk About Our Periods!

My most popular post. Some people who know me in real life will know that I like to talk about periods and try to de-stigmatise them. They’re nothing to be ashamed about after all. After a while, it dawned on me that I should write a post on the subject, as it’s something I’m quite passionate discussing. I can’t believe I didn’t write this post sooner actually.

5. To Shave Or Not To Shave

Again, this is something I’m really glad I talked about. I don’t really discuss this in real life but I think it’s important that no one should feel pressured to have a “hairless” body, particularly if they don’t want to. Everything should be about choice, not societal expectations.

6. Thoughts from 00:32, 1 January 2016

Out of all my posts, this is one of the ones I remember writing most clearly. It was spontaneously written. I was settling into a camp bed in my living room, wrapping myself up in a sleeping bag, as I’d given my bed up to one of the guests we had staying with us for New Year’s. I remember thinking how crazy it is that we celebrate time. How odd yet amazing that is. I just had to write it down, or those thoughts would be gone by the time I woke up.

Through Our Eyes: A New Blog

Friday, 15 July 2016

So, you know that in a few past posts I’ve mentioned that some other bloggers and I are starting a new blog. The amazing Whitney from the blog Whitney Loren contacted me a few months ago with an idea for a blog that had seven authors; one for each day of the week. Of course, I accepted my place as one of the bloggers - it’s such an exciting thing to be a part of!

After some discussion with the 6 other girls, the name Through Our Eyes was decided on - I hope you like it as much as we do!

Obviously, we won’t always be able to post - there’ll be times when we’ve got too much to do or simply need a bit of a break. On these occasions, we’ll choose another blogger to fill in for us. They’ll be someone we personally love reading and this way we’ll introduce you to some new bloggers we think deserve more attention.

Every other week there will be a theme for our posts. The first two weeks are exceptions as the first is Introductions! Next week, the theme will be TV shows and the week after that there will be no theme. The themeless weeks are a chance for us to be more individual to make the content we share more personal to us.

Hopefully, there will be something on there for everyone! You may connect with a particular blogger and discover new blogs through the blog.

This week has been a special week for us TOE bloggers. On Monday our first post (courtesy of Katie) went live and we’ve been posting our introductions ever since! Go over there now to find out who all the other contributing bloggers are and tell us what you think!

How Blogging Has Affected My Life | Another Ranting Reader's 1st Birthday

Wednesday, 11 May 2016

A year ago today my first blog post went live. A year! Can you believe that?! The time has seriously flown by - I know that probably sounds clichéd but it’s true. This year I’ve become part of the blogging community and have seen how blogging has affected my life, writing and mental health (and believe me, it’s been a mixed bag!).

Having my blog has definitely added to my workload. I knew that would happen and have definitely got no reason to complain. However, I have noticed that most people underestimate just how much work blogging can be. I mean there’s writing the post (which is definitely the easiest bit), adding pictures and links, trying to understand SEO, promoting a post and ensuring everything is up to date. And that’s just for one post.

When you’re trying to do multiple posts a week along with trying to do your best in your GCSEs, that workload gets a bit too much, which is why I was forced to cut my blogging time down a bit until my exams are over.

This increased workload can cause extra stress. I, as a blogger, am basically setting myself extra homework and providing myself with more pressure and more deadlines. But I love it. I do it because I freaking love blogging, and I genuinely think it’s had a great impact on my mental health (despite the added stress thing).

I’ve met so many positive and amazing people through the blogging community and my blog has helped me develop my relationship with friends I already had. It’s allowed me to clear my head and keep going. It’s been a constant thing in my life for the past year.

Then my writing? How has blogging affected my writing? Well, I actually wrote a post on that topic a few months ago - read it here (plug plug plug). Personally, I think my writing has improved since I started my blog - or at least I hope that’s the case. Having this blog has meant that I have had to keep writing and to keep my creative juices flowing. Blogging has also, somehow, caused me to find a real love for writing poetry and has made me open up my writing in terms of both skill and medium.

Thank you all for reading and following my blog for the past year; I know some of you have read every single post and I can’t express how thankful I am for that.

If you’ve not read my first ever post or want a trip down memory lane go over and have a read: Why do you wear makeup?

And here’s my most recent post, to round things off nicely: Why We All Need to Dream

I hope you guys have had a great year and I look forward to hopefully sharing much more with you.

Happy 1st Birthday Another Ranting Reader!

My Advice to New Bloggers

Monday, 25 January 2016

I’ve been blogging for nearly 9 months. 9 months! I can’t really be considered a new blogger anymore, I mean this’ll be my 96th post! Yeah, definitely not a newbie anymore. So I thought that I would share some things that I’ve learned along the way to hopefully help some of you who can still be classed as “newbies”!

1. You don’t have to fit a specific niche

My blog is a mishmash of whatever I want to write about. It doesn’t really fit into a niche, even though I may have tried sometimes, but I think that my readers now know what sort of content to expect from me: creative writing, 5 Fridays, opinion posts and personal posts, to put it more generally. As longs you’re writing about subjects you love and are passionate about and enjoy writing about, then your content will be the best quality it can be. If you enjoy writing about topics that would cover a wide range of niches, go for it. Call yourself a lifestyle blogger, it’s what most of us do if we’re honest here.

2. Comment and be an active blog reader

Learn about blogging through other bloggers. Meet and discuss things with new people from across the world and become part of the amazing blogging community. Pick up advice and tips from other bloggers that will make the whole blogging thing easier. Actually leave proper, thought-out comments on posts that interest you and make you want to share your opinion. Agree with the writer, disagree with them. Just participate. Some blog posts can change your mind completely on a certain subject and others can show you brilliant products that you may not have picked up before.

I honestly think that the community element of blogging is one of my favourite aspects of it. I can chat with new people who have different experiences to me and support is always there if I need it.

Commenting and engaging with other bloggers is a great way to boost traffic and follower count as well, even though that shouldn’t be the main reason you do it. But it does mean that potential readers are more aware of your blog’s existence - which can never be a bad thing!

3. Don’t worry, you will get a layout you are happy with eventually

It could take 1 try or 100, but you’ll get there. There are so many different ways of presenting your content that it can sometimes be quite overwhelming and HTML just brings added confused to the subject (I’m really trying with HTML but it’s just a load of gobbledygook to the uneducated mind!). Find something that expresses you in a way that a website layout can. Use colours you like and fonts you love! If you want you can buy a pre-made template from one of the various companies that sell them online (I’ve seen quite a few on Etsy, although there are loads of websites that offer lots of cool designs).

Your tastes will change over time but that’s good. You can keep changing and adding or taking away bits here and there. You don’t stay constant as a person, so why should your blog layout?

4. As hard as it is, try not to compare yourself to other bloggers

There are so many blogs that have hundreds of thousands of followers and have had millions of views, and that can be a bit intimidating if you’re just starting out. You see all these pristine and seemingly flawless blogs who have loads of comments as soon as they post and look all professional. But they’re just ordinary people like you. They started out in the same way you did: with a computer, a platform and an empty blog. They had no followers or views in the beginning but they wrote and kept on writing until people read what they wrote. The experimented and tried different things and they found the tips and tricks that worked best for them. And most of them starting blogging a few years ago when blogs were a much rarer species than they are now.

Different types of blog will get different amounts of followers. For example, beauty and lifestyle blogs tend to get more traffic and followers. They’re just more popular. Book blogs can also be popular, but are often a bit more niche. My blog is primarily my writing - sometimes I like to think of it as my writing portfolio - and that doesn’t interest some people, so I don’t get as many followers as a beauty blog may get. But that’s okay, I want my readers to be engaged and interested, not there for no reason.

Don’t get intimidated and start doubting your worth as a blogger. You can do it, it just takes time.

5. Sometimes you will want to give up - DON’T!

For the first few months of blogging, I felt a little downhearted as I had had a surge of views in the first month which then died down a bit. I got Bloglovin’ and no one was following me. I had no comments. Frankly, it felt like no one was noticing my blog, let alone reading it. That’s not a great feeling, but it’s likely you’ll experience the same thing.

My advice for this situation? Keep posting and keep going. Make sure that you carry on writing and improving your writing. People will read your blog as long as you put enthusiasm and effort into it. Growing a following, even if it’s only a small one, takes time. You can’t rush things.

6. Take pictures!

Photography is really fun, even if it’s just the odd silly selfie thrown into a post. You can dabble with photo editing and different angles and flat-lays and new, inventive backgrounds. It’s all so exciting! I personally love taking pictures - it’s just another way to be creative and that just appeals to me a lot! And plus everyone loves a blog with pictures, it makes it look so much prettier and more personal!

Good luck guys! Comment the link to your blog below and I’ll have a look at it!

5 Ways to Improve Your Blogging Productivity

Friday, 30 October 2015

Over the past 6 months my productivity has been all over the place when it comes to blogging. Sometimes I have written 5 posts in a row and gotten up to date on everything to with my blog. Other times however, I haven’t been able to write at all. The motivation just wasn’t there, causing a severe case of blogger’s block. When I started my blog I did some things from the get go that would help me in such times.

1.Write in Advance!

As often as I can I try to write my posts before I publish them (she says writing this post the day it goes up!). Sometimes the has even been weeks prior to the publication date of the post in question. Whenever I write a post I will type it up and schedule it as soon as possible! The more posts you have waiting to be published the less stress you will have further down the line.

2. Create a Schedule

I created my schedule before I had even shared my first post. Having made my blog on a Sunday evening, I didn’t put that first post up until the Monday. I decided on that Sunday that I would post on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, to break up my week and allow some free time for homework and my hobbies etc. on the weekends. This helped keep my stress levels down as I wasn’t worrying about constantly producing posts and I know the dates of every blog post I will ever put up, and therefore helps with point 1 as I can stack up these pre-written posts.

Creating a schedule has also helped my view count. Readers will get to know your schedule as you post, particularly if you mention it in somewhere like your About page. They will know when to come back to find new content. But, then again, you’ve got to make sure you post when you say you will otherwise you’ll feel the guilt of not having posted when you see your views rise that day.

3. Start a Series

I have a long running series called ‘5 Fridays’, where I post a list of 5 things… on a Friday. As you can probably tell from the title, this post is included in that. As my blog has no real niche, I can write about really anything in this series. In fact I’ve written on topics ranging from Disney soundtracks to books that have changed my life and steps to self love.

These posts are usually quicker to write as they have the same format. It’s really quite simple: choose a topic, write a brief introduction (or none at all) , decide on 5 points and expand on them.

Having a series means that some posts are much less time consuming than they need to be - which gives you more time to write more blog posts!

4. Carry Around a “Blogging” Notebook

For my birthday I received two notebooks (and bought another one when I went shopping with my friend Katie… oops!), but I have only started using one of them. It’s really cute and I love the message it has on the front of it! I have owned millions of notebooks for practically my whole life - I love them. However it has only really been in the past 3 weeks that I have been using one for the specific purpose of blogging. I carry it with me anywhere and everywhere, so that if I get a sudden idea or inspiration for a post I can write it down in something more substantial than the notes app on my phone. I have written posts on the bus to and from school, while it is particularly quiet when I’m on prefect duty and really anywhere where I have a spare moment. I’ve got so much written in this one notebook already.

I don’t just write blog posts in that notebook though. I have some smaller pieces in there, 3 lines some of them. Little observations on life and the world that wouldn’t really fit into a blog post. I don’t know quite what I’m going to do with those yet - maybe they’ll never be published. That’s for me to decide.

5. PLAN YOUR LIFE!

This one’s more of a life tip in general I think:

Before I started Year 11 I bought myself a weekly wall planner. Not like the ones we are given in school, where I write down homework I am set and things I need to do in the school day. This planner is much more personal. For a start it has teacups printed on it! Back the point Jemima…

I write all sorts on my wall planner. From birthdays and trips to upcoming blog posts and homework due dates. I scribble my life onto it. And it hasn’t just helped me with my overall productivity it’s made me feel better in myself.

If I feel that I need a break or a relax then I can write down when I am going to do so. I write down notices on when I’m going to go out for a walk or go to a friend’s house. It’s all there, sorted so that I don’t put too much stress on myself.

So there are my tips for blogging productivity. Please bear in mind that I slip up and fall behind as well and I’m sure every blogger does. It’s just about doing your best in a way that suits you.

Jemima x

How Blogging has Affected my Writing

Monday, 21 September 2015

Since starting my blog in May I have written nearly 50 posts on topics that vary widely. I have written about happiness, self love, events in my life, books that I enjoy and, possibly my favourite thing in the world: writing. That’s what blogging is essentially all about, isn’t it? Writing.

Of course, I did write a lot before I started blogging. I have done basically since I could. But blogging has started me writing in a different way to normal.

Instead of sticking to narratives and individual stories only, I have expanded to another realm of the craft. I now write about actual events that have occurred in my life – whether it is something like watching an emotional film about one of my biggest writing inspirations or going on a trek in order to complete my bronze D of E award. I can now write about my opinions in a way that I know other people will hear (more like read!) them. I can try to help others by writing about my own experiences and reach out to a wider audience.

Blogging has improved my writing and my mind because it forces me to be creative and think outside of the box on a regular basis – particularly because I have a weekly schedule to stick to. It makes me think about a lot of things in more depth, and I love that.

But blogging has had some negative effects on my writing. Take what I said about blogging and narratives; they’re very different styles of writing. I have said many times just how much I love to create different stories and characters – and I feel that one story and a few characters in particular have suffered since I started to blog.

I have been writing a novel for over six months now and I add to it whenever I can (particularly when there is something else that needs to be done!). I adore my characters and truly wish to give them as much attention as I absolutely can, but given the amount of time I am in school, completing schoolwork at home, sorting out my room, practicing my violin and doing extra things outside of school, they have had to take the back seat multiple times. And that’s without publishing three blog posts each week thrown into the mix.

I’m not complaining. I love blogging – I really do; it has given me the chance to speak to some great people and reach out to people all across the globe. But I’m convinced that blogging has prevented the word count on my novel from growing as much as it should have done.

The only thing I wish for is more hours in the day. More hours in which I could just write. To give my characters the tie they deserve.

-----------------------------

Are you a writer and a blogger? How do you think your righting has been effected by blogging? I would love to know (Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this!).

Jemima x
