To The Lost Girl by the lipstick stained gum | A Poem

Lipstick stained gum is all I see,
Stuck to tiles in front of your feet;
Before those boots that shiver so,
And jeans that have been ripped to and fro.
A smudge of blush upon your cheek,
A lone light among a complexion so bleak.
The winter does you no good, my dear,
I see it in your eyes, You fear
The odd time inevitably come,
Where your brain turns dumb
And your soul grows dim,
So that there is no more light left within
That pretty little person I love so well,
Who stands where the lipstick stained gum fell.
You fear, my love, I know you fear
That that day should draw near.
You brace yourself - you’re ready.
As if it has arrived already.
That day when you shall be gone -
The human star that shone
So bright among us all.
You eclipsed us, my love,
Like the Sun would hide the Moon up above;
Yes, we were dark and there all the while,
But you were the Nile
Just as we were the Egyptians surrounding -
Depending on the life you always brought around.
You have no reason to fear, my girl,
I do not consider you to have unfurled.
For to me you are, and shall always be,
The one who gave happiness to me.

I haven't posted a lot of poetry before. In fact, this is the third poem ever to go up on my blog. I would really love it if I could get some constructive criticism on my work as I really want to improve my poetry writing. Hope you all enjoyed!

5 books to read in 2016

This year I have set my reading target at 20 books. This is less than half of the books I read last year, but I have set a lower target so that I can do other things rather than worrying that I won’t complete my goal. I can focus more on my schoolwork, my exams, my blog and my novel.
Obviously I will still be reading a lot (I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t), it just means that I can enjoy reading more without the added pressure.

So although I’m planning to read less books, I have got some books already on my 2016 TBR pile, and I thought I would share them with you guys:

1. I Am Malala by Malala Yousfzai with Patricia McCormick

I picked this up on the 30th December and I seriously can’t wait tot read it. I have been a fan of Malala ever since I heard for her. She’s so brave and inspiring. I am just so excited to read about it properly, rathe than from news stories caught every now and then or posts on social media that don’t go into detail about specific events.

2. Wicked by Gregory Maguire

In the Easter holidays last year, I went to see the production of Wicked in the West End and oh my word it’s amazing!!! I fell in love with the way the characters were portrayed, the symbolism and foreshadowing that was thrown in pretty much constantly and I kind of became obsessed with the soundtrack. Even now I am singing along to it while writing blog posts or doing chores around the house. The show was so good that I knew I had to read the book. I picked it up in the October half term and haven’t had chance to read it yet, so it’ll have to be a job for 2016.

3. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

In December, the BBC started to air a series called Dickensian, in which all of Charles Dickens’ characters are in the same place and are all part of the same story. Someone I know described it as “a Victorian Eastenders”, and that’s precisely what it is.

I know some Dickens characters well, but that’s down to TV programmes, films and musicals, rather than my having actually read the books. I have been recommended Great Expectations a few times and I am intrigued by the characters in Dickensian that I know to feature in it, so I plan to read it in the coming year.

4. P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern

I am such a fan of Cecelia Ahern’s work. I love the way her characters come to life and the imagination put behind her stories. However, I have only read a fraction of her books. She has so many I want to read but simply haven’t gotten round to reading yet. One of her books I’ve had on my shelf but never read is P.S. I Love You, possibly her most famous novel. It needs to be read after sitting there for so long.

5. Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

I have been listening to the radio play of this with my dad for the past few days and I love it! However, the radio play version is abridged and I haven’t reached the end yet. I have missed certain bits of it and want to catch up properly, with all the details of the book. As I haven’t found out who the killer is yet, it’ll be better for me to read the book spoiler free.

What are you planning to read this year? Have you set a reading target for 2016?

Does New Year’s Eve ever feel slightly anticlimactic to you? We chant the countdown to the New Year in unison, stay up late, go partying, set off fireworks - all celebrating the passing of time. I think that’s quite beautiful. In fact, it’s one of my favourites things about humanity. We set aside a certain day to celebrate just one second. We celebrate again and, well, what we really celebrate is time.

Birthdays, anniversaries, New Years. It’s just marking time. You don’t see my cat setting off fireworks because another day has started (that just so happened to be January 1st). She doesn’t care. All she cares about is that she’s hungry and wants a cuddle. She doesn’t give a damn about your New Year’s Resolutions. She’s a cat.

But we humans, we do give a damn. I mean how many blog posts have you seen that publish a blogger’s goals for the coming year? Yeah, a whole load, including two posts from me.

We choose this day to start bettering ourselves (or should I say attempting to better ourselves?), when that could be done on any day of the year. Seconds go by without us even thinking about it.

One second.
Two seconds.
Three seconds.

All gone without you noticing. We just want food. We just want to sleep.  Something far more important is on your mind. Seconds are insignificant. Aren’t they?

My Personal Goals for 2016

It seems like every blogger is doing the same few posts at the moment, but I want to publish my goals for this year, in the hope that writing them down and letting other people see them will make me more motivated to complete them!

1. Get out of bed when you're supposed to!

The time you set your alarm for is the time that will give you less stress in the morning. No one likes having to run for the bus because you’ve got 2 minutes until it leaves, do they? Get up on time and stop running around like a luny! It’s not helping anybody.

2. Finish this goddamn novel!

You’re midway through this. In the summer you will have more time - complete this. 27,500 words is a great achievement and you should be proud of that, but you won’t rest until you have a finished novel in front of you. And plus your characters need to grow up - they need you. Now get on with it!

3. Have at least 30 screen-free minute before you go to bed!

You are so frantic and are constantly doing things - whether that’s writing, checking your blog, reading other blogs or just clearing up something when that could wait till later. Try not to look at any screens at least half an hour before you intend to go to bed. I know it’s hard, but try. Set down your homework and revision and anything else that’s keeping you up. Pick up a book or write in a notebook. Do something that will relax your mind.

4. Experiment with more make-up looks!

Get your creativity going and use loads of different colours and techniques. Invest in some decent make-up brushes and chuck out your old ones - they’re rubbish. Be daring with what you do - try out bright lipsticks and eyeshadows and attempt contouring!

5. Visit at least 2 museums.

Try to go to 3 if you can. You've got a long summer, take that time to go to a museum. Learn something! Go by yourself if you have to!

6. Write something every day.

By this I do not mean anything school related! Write in a journal, write more of your novel or write a blog post. Just make sure you keep writing!

7. Complete my GoodReads challenge (again!)

This year I've decided to read 20 books. Yes, this is 35 less than last year but I think that it's suitable when my current workload is considered.

5 Blogging Goals for 2016

Friday, 1 January 2016

So, 2016. It's here and has the potential to be a great year for both me and my blog. So I’ve set myself 5 blogging goals to accomplish by 2017.

1. Double my Bloglovin’ followers!

I currently have 27 followers on Bloglovin’. Now, I don’t think that gaining another 27 in 2016 sounds too ridiculous. In fact I think it's rather achievable, seeing as I managed to gain that amount of  followers in roughly 7 months.  So hopefully I'll have 54 followers by this time next year!

If you wish to follow me on Bloglovin’ you can follow me here!

(Also thank you to everyone who follows me already. It's a great feeling knowing that real people are interested in my blog!)

2. Improve the quality of my photography and editing.

I need to take better pictures. I want to be able to use the best pictures as possible on my blog. It’ll make all my posts look so much more finished and rounded. I’ll still only be using my iPhone 4S camera or my small digital camera, but with an improved editing and some spring and summer lighting the results shouldn’t be too bad.

3. Hit 20,000 views

This one’s a little bit more out there. So far my blog has had 7, 371 views. Only 12, 629  views away from my goal! Another 12 months and I could have completed this goal! I just need to ensure that the quality of my content is high and I mingle more with my fellow bloggers.

4. Do another collab!

Earlier this year I did a collaboration post with Katie, from Katieswaytobehappy. We constructed two posts together, and I must say I’m rather proud of them (Click here and here to view our collabs!). I hope to do another collab with Katie or another blogger.

5. Lengthen my header

It’s not quite right for me at the moment and I want to change it - not drastically but a little bit.

I hope you all have a great year!
